Q: hey, im ftm an wanna take T but will i have to have a hystorectomy? only i dont realy wanna chop my body around but i heard you can get cancer an they can refuse you T if you dont have a hystorectomy is that all true? only i dunno who to trust on this matter
Anonymous

I was told that a hysto was necessary if I wanted to take T but I’ve been told since here by other guys that it wasn’t necessary for them, so no, you don’t have to have a hystorectomy to take T. What you may have to have instead is a pelvic ultrasound every two years, because there is an increased risk of cancer, so it’s important to test regularly to make sure you haven’t developed it.

Q: In a previous response, you mentioned that doctors want you to have a hysterectomy if you want to go on T? Is this absolutely compulsory, as I heard that you have to stay on T (or other hormones) forever if you have a hysterectomy, and I don't particularly want to be locked in to taking T for the rest of my life... Appreciate a clarification on this point, thanks!

I was told it was compulsory, but I’ve since been told otherwise, which is good news!

Q: In response to your reply to dinozzoboy, I wanted to point out that you don't have to have a hysterectomy and not wanting one shouldn't slow down you going on testosterone. Yes, they do recommend it after two years on testosterone because of increased risk of cancer, however if you don't want one, the other option is a pelvic ultrasound every two years instead. x

Ah, thanks for that. At Charing Cross I was led to believe that if I didn’t want a hysto it’d be a lot harder for me to start T (I did want a hysto)

That’s really good to know

Q: Hey I'm new to the trans community an would like some information as I've asked people got lied to an coned an it's very annoying please can you help? Only I'm agoraphobic an have no money I want to start T but can't pay I don't wanna go through my doctor as I hate him I don't really want shrinks or therapists can you do ir without them? An can T give you problems an cancer? Only I don't want a hysterectomy either sorry it's so long
dinozzoboy-deactivated20120502

Hey,

At least in the UK it’s nearly impossible to get T without some kind of psychiatric input. This is because the guidelines UK doctors work under recommend it, even if they don’t demand it. Sometimes, particularly in the past, if you’d been living full time as male, you would be able to get it without seeing a psychiatrist or counsellor privately, but now that’s necessary.

Your options are private and NHS. For private, you have to pay. We have a document here with private transition costs detailed. If you have no money though, NHS sounds like your only option. That requires going through a doctor (if you don’t like your GP you could change GP). Generally speaking your doctor will refer you to the local mental health clinic, who will assess you for underlying problems that might make you think you’re trans (and they might be able to offer you help for your agoraphobia as well) and refer you to the gender identity clinic, who you will see at least twice before starting testosterone probably.

There are risks with testosterone. This document describes them quite well.

If you don’t want a hysterectomy they may be wary of starting you on testosterone because it increases your risk of cervical cancer, so they may feel it’s important that those parts will be removed - they generally advise about two years on T.

I hope this helped

Matt

Q: You may want to update all the links on the left... the links lead no where. and there is info there people will need! :)

Joey: Thanks for flagging this up. We will when we can, but we are all people with our own busy lives, we just choose to do this because we want to have a positive impact. However, if there is information people do feel they need, they can always ask and we will give them what we can (we don’t know everyone!)

We are the Harness Hangar!

image

A new small business specialising in hand made, practical, reliable, funky looking harnesses.

Stemmed from an idea I (Sarah) had to make a harness for my FtM partner, which worked really well, we have decided to lend our services to a greater good: harnesses for all!

A lot of harnesses out there are expensive, uncomfortable, and only come in black or white. But now ours! they come in any colour you choose!

All profits will be going to funding my partner’s surgery, and depending on the success  we have, we have a few cool things planned for afterwards.

So follow us here for news, up dates, and pictures of our awesome harnesses!

TRANS MEN IN THE UK

I run a trans men in the UK group on Facebook. TM UK is run for trans men by trans men. The group is open to anyone who was AFAB (assigned female at birth) but does not identify with that gender.

It is a secret group so it means no-one can find it or discover you are on it. It also means that posts will not appear to your friends in the newsfeed unless your friend is also a part of the group.

This group has been running since August 2011. I moderate this group with 2 other guys in order to ensure things are running smoothly. Equally it means that if there are any issues or queries one of us will be on hand to deal with it.

The group now has just over 300 members and is active every day.

It is a great source for support, advice and making friends.

If you are interested in joining please drop me message (preferably non anon so I can reply to you personally) http://meandmychimpanzee.tumblr.com/ask

Cheers,

Ryan

Young and trans and in the UK? Interested in art and technology? Want to meet other young trans people, and think about your own identity and find out about others? Then check out these workshops!

FREE event at the Science Museum (London) for trans youth aged under 25 in the UK - ALL TRAVEL EXPENSES REIMBURSED. Please reblog!

When:

1-4pm, Saturday 14th April

Where:

Science Museum, (click here for a map). Meet at the Information Point.

Some of our youth group members attended a workshop at the Science Museum earlier in the year that responded to the art exhibition Electro boutique

We’re now holding a second workshop on Saturday 14th April from 1-4pm at the Science Museum.  We will visit the current art exhibition, Hexen 2.0 by Susan Treister, and have an opportunity to discuss how science and technology impacts on forming our identities.  This session will respond to the new art exhibition as well as help us shape a further 6 workshops that will culminate in an exhibition of our own work.

Gendered Intelligence has received a£10,000 grant to carry out an arts based project with the Science Museum for young trans people around these themes.  We’ll be thinking about how new social media and technology, including Second Life and video games, offers up a place where our fantasy and inner selves can be explored, and expressing these thoughts through our own art projects.

These follow-up sessions will take place on a Thursday from 6-9pm on the following dates:
26th April, 3rd May, 10th May, 17th May, 24th May & 31st May. You do not have to attend all / any of these follow ups to attend the event on Saturday 14th.

There will be an exhibition and a presentation of the works on Thursday 14th June where all families, friends and interested parties will be invited to the Science Museum.  You do not have to attend all the workshops but there are limited places, so you need to register your interest.  Contact us for more information - either on tumblr or email us admin@genderedintelligence.co.uk. We’ll need a (chosen) name and contact email from you to book your place.

A super scrumptious lunch will be provided and ALL travel is reimbursed regardless where you come from and how you travel (apart from helicopter - the budget doesn’t stretch that far!).

Q: Also you don't need to have had any surgeries done, though it would possibly strengthen your case if you have. You need to have been living full time as male/female for two years, and provide evidence that you have done. Ok, end of comment now, just wanted to correct that.

Q: What exactly do you have to do in order to be eligible for a Gender Recognition Certificate? To they completely insist on you having surgery? Are there compulsory requirements?
Anonymous

You need to have a diagnosis of GID confirmed by two? I think? specialists from a list of specialists that they have, and you need to have been living documented full time (they usually use date of name change for this) for two years. Surgery and hormones are not necessary.

Guinea pigs needed!

Not literally, but I need some guys to help me out! I am starting a project to help my partner raise money for surgery (and hoping to expand even further!) But I need some guys to help me out, to see if the idea is feasible.

We don’t want to give away details, mainly because being secretive is fun, but also because, well, I dont want anyone stealing our idea! :P All I will say is that I am targetting an area in the market that is severly lacking (check the tags for more clues)…

I am looking for two guys who wear size XS boxers, and one who wears size S. So, if you are intregued and wanna help out, send me a massage :)  you can hit me up at charmandharm.tumblr.com

Q: y do transguys hav such silly names like kayden or skylar or kaine or whateva. y don't they just call themselves names that cisguys are actually called irl? like alex etccc
Anonymous

Joey: I have to say that I think this is quite an offensive thing to say.

Some people are called Kaiden / Kayden / Skylar / Kaine… in fact I went to school with a Kaine.

Some of those people are cis. A person’s name is THEIR name and not really up for other people to judge as far as I see it.

Open your mind please.
